Over the course of its long and storied history, London has attracted its fair share of the rich and famous – not to mention the infamous. This week, it was revealed that none other than Justin Bieber is heading to the capital to take up part-time residency in a fantastical mansion with a jaw-dropping rental rate. Perhaps he’s taking advantage of the pound crash post-Brexit? Anyway, with neighbours ranging from billionaire business tycoons, property moguls and diplomats, Bieber will undoubtedly be one of the youngest residents of The Bishops Avenue. But still, he’s far from the first star from oversees who has called the UK capital their home. Here’s our top picks of stars who have their heart in London.
Back in 2011, RiRi spent some time in London renting a luxury penthouse apartment in Knightsbridge for around £50,000 a week. Bargain. One of the capital’s largest apartments, it has also been rented out by Tom Cruise whist he’s been filming in London and has six bedrooms – one with its own Jacuzzi – as well as a gym, music room and a cinema. Rihanna really wanted to feel like a proper Londoner, so much so that she braved the Jubilee Line during rush hour to get to her own show at the O2, promoting more than a few double takes from stunned commuters. Oh, and her song ‘You Da One’ was filmed against a Hackney backdrop back in 2011, which just about qualifies her as an honorary Londoner.
Deep breath. Rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, TV judge, entrepreneur, inventor and philanthropist will.i.am has long called London is second home. Spending so much time in the Big Smoke, he even declared that London is ‘the centre of the world’ and that he’d love to one day become a British citizen. His love of London even made it into his video for ‘This Is Love’ featuring stunning shots of Tower Bridge. He’s known for being fairly elusive and paparazzi-shy, so if and when the British passport arrives keep an eye open on those quiet suburban streets…
The Queen of Pop has essentially set up permanent residency in London. We’re semi-reliably informed Madonna’s got seven houses and apartments around the city – one for every day of the week we suppose – when she’s not over in the US. She’s been spotted cycling through Regent’s Park and heading down to the local shops – besides that extraordinary property portfolio, she’s just like the rest of us. Right?
Her time as Pussycat Dolls lead singer might have come to a close, but Nicole Scherzinger’s spent more than just fleeting moments in the UK over the last few years thanks to West End roles and as an X Factor judge. After a stint as Grizabella in Cats at the London Palladium and now well into her third term on the X Factor judging panel, the superstar singer has hinted that she’s looking to make Notting Hill her second home. She’s made it clear she’s also open to more roles on the West End stage and hopes to work on her solo career in our fair city, which would be, well, shamazing.
